I used to think the same thing. The lawyers get all the money and the supposedly wronged consumer gets ten bucks.

After a while I realized that there's another spin on it. You might expect consumer protection to be a government function, but it's generally not very well done by governments in the US, for various reasons. In the absence of gov't consumer protection, big corporations will screw you over and over.

One reason for the corporation NOT to screw you is to avoid being targeted for a class-action. The gov't has effectively outsourced this function to enterprising lawyers. Instead of paying the gov't a fine, they pay the huge legal fees.

I agree that it is an imperfect system, and there are plenty of bogus class actions. But it is not without value.

You can use some paycheck calculator to get exact information about what payroll taxes are being payed. I know www.paycheckcity.com, however this is for United States only. I do not know about anything similar for EU.

Did you consider a partnership for Consultants or some other means of profit sharing? The thing about a salary is that you'll have to pay it even when the company does bad which somehow counters the idea of sharing in the success of the company.

If I had all the skills required to work for Percona I'm pretty sure I'd do good on my own as well and only use Percona as multiplicator for my own business so I might as well share alike in the losses (if there are any).

The nice thing about payroll taxes from a lawmakers perspective is that not many voter will notice it going up so not as many people will care. And even if you as an employer raise the question it can be construed as cheaping out on your employees' benefits.

I absolutely agree with Vlad. Horrible and terrific health care system in US. The current monopolies of these insurance companies should be destroyed and there should not be any second opinition to be asked. All these insurance systems are big BS. I am waiting for someone take in charage and destroy the existing systesm.

I have never lived in UK therefore I can not compare health care systems in US and UK, but US system of a monopolies of a private insurance companies must be changed/altered/ destroyed (as Karfagen ). I do not want a third commercial party between me and my doctor or a hospital. Remember, here in US insurance company decides what is good for you - not your doctor. The less procedures/treatments insurance company approves the bigger their profit. Btw, have you ever tried to get health insurance directly not from employer? When you have precondition?

What a great response from your son. I totally agree with him about reading a book instead of smoking.

Like you I never throw away books and have an ever increasing pile of them, especially if they are old and interesting.

Books are the lifeblood of the modern age, even though we all now live with computers. You only have to look at how many searches people make on Public Domain information to see how important books from the past really are.
